Does God speak to us?

At the young age of 9, while sitting in a fold-out cushioned chair next to people I don't know, I heard the word, "Go". I wasn't sure what to do with it, or why I heard it, so I remained silent. I've heard this particular voice many times throughout my life and you won’t believe how its changed every fiber of my being.

Whenever I've heard the still small voice speak, I've tried to obey regardless of how uncomfortable it felt. How do I know it was God? Would you tell yourself to go do things you didn't want to do or would never dream of doing in a million years?

I think we all know the answer is a definite - no.

Obedience Brings Amazing

If I'm being perfectly honest, I don't always enjoy 'going' when God says, "Go", because often it makes me do things I'm not comfortable doing, like feeding people who are smelly and dirty, like giving a homeless man $20 when I know he'll just spend it on alcohol. Like the time I heard him say to pray for the four boys standing just outside a restaurant. Talk about uncomfortable!

What is so amazing is that because of my obedience, amazing things happen! For instance, two o the four boys at that restaurant were healed on the spot. Would I have interrupted lunch with my brother and sister-in-law (who had just moved there and were taking me out to lunch) without hearing it? Absolutely not. I'm kind most times, but I would never have done that on my own.

Sometimes I don't want to obey what I hear, and that's why most people don't hear - or don't believe. Like me at times, they don't know how it will change their life. In Deuteronomy 28:1,2 it says if you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully keep all his commands then He will set you high above all the nations of the world, and you will experience all the blessings He has for you.

Knowing this, some people consider it too much of a sacrifice to obey God and I completely get it.

Let's talk about why

I asked God to help me with my obedience, not my disobedience. I do not wish to be that little girl standing with fists. I want to be an obedient daughter so he can connect with thousands of people all around the globe through me. That is my heart and my life's desire. If I didn't believe God speaks to me, then I've got no explanation for all the hearts that have been healed and restored over the years. I'm certainly not the one doing the healing, though it appears that way to those who have been healed, I'm also strange to them.

Most people struggle with internal or external rebellion.

  • Internal rebellion is feeling sorry for oneself or doing something for someone but they grumble about it in their mind. They often ask others to do things they wouldn't ever consider doing.
  • External rebellion is flat out saying you're not going to do something, being arrogant and self-centered.

We all know the importance of obedience. We want all children to obey - so why do we still struggle with obeying the Creator of the Universe?

Fear keeps us from accepting.

People fear being rejected so intensely. If you're a concrete thinker then you'll demand proof of something before you believe it, otherwise, you'll be skeptical. When you don't believe something is possible, then you'll doubt and disbelieve it before you'll be part of looking foolish. Do my own friends and family believe that I hear God? Some do, but most don't. Being a disciple of Jesus often means you'll look foolish to others often. Fear of rejection keeps most people from hearing God, but he's looking for men and women who are willing.

Being uncomfortable is too uncomfortable

Just the thought of being uncomfortable is, in and of itself, too uncomfortable at times. If being a servant of God were easier, most of the world would be following Jesus. Disciples lived in a constant state of being uncomfortable. It takes GREAT character strength and freedom, it takes everything inside of you to move forward when he says, "Go".

God spoke to Moses through a burning bush. He spoke to Gideon through a fleece. He spoke to Saul on the Damascus road through a bright light and to Balaam through a donkey. What makes us believe he wouldn't speak to us through the very element his merciful son left for us; the "Comforter", the "Still small voice", the "Holy Spirit".
